It is almost impossible to escape the urban jungle that is Manhattan. The best you’ll do is getting lost in Central Park’s Ramble. And even then, you still end up with skyscrapers towering over you as soon as you re-emerge from the “woods.” When you’ve tried and failed to find New York City’s nature, there’s a hotel waiting for you just a few blocks from the famed man-made park, where you might have more success.

A recently released study by scientists at the University of Staffordshire in England showed that AgroSci’s air-purifying Aerogation green walls are highly effective at breaking down a major fossil fuel pollutant, nitrogen dioxide. NO2 is a dangerous gas that causes and exacerbates respiratory illnesses.

Nitrogen dioxide levels in rooms using a local company’s Aerogation green-wall system were reduced by more than 60 percent, according to new research at Staffordshire University in England.

Whatever the marketers may say, there’s no such thing as a truly 100% sustainable hotel. Any development has a footprint, and if we’re going to be rigorous about it, the only fully sustainable approach would be to leave the land alone and let nature do its wild thing.
